Contrast is the difference of elements in a picture. Some examples would be light and dark, rough and smooth, large and small, things like that. With this picture the contrast of light and dark are pretty bold with the figures appearing out of thin air. Another thing to note is the contrast of the light body behind Hellboy's darker head draws your eye right to the center of the picture.
