Lucy Orta is a British visual artist who currently resides in Paris, France. After graduating with an honours degree in fashion design, she began practicing as a visual artist in the early 90s. Her works combine architecture, fashion, and social activism. Lucy and her husband (Jorge Orta) established a non-profit association named Studio Orta to challenge the boundaries of public art between both the body and architecture.
In 1992, Lucy began Refuge Wear and Body Architecture, her line that allows a temporary shelter for the inhabitant which also allows mobility (basically a mobile home that you can wear) that she called 'Body Architecture'. These waterproof shelters provided shelter for the Kurd refugee population, temporary protection and shelter from natural disasters such as the Kobe earthquake, and mobile sleeping bags for the homeless. I think Lucy has a very creative mind, and her work definitely shows her creativity. The 'Body Architecture' portable shelters are very interesting, and I like how she puts her work to good use.
